Restoration of a Roman manor

The village of Arche in the province of Frosinone in the province of Lazio. Since the time of the Roman Empire, it has been famous as a production area for grapes and other wonderful agricultural products. The Marocco family, which has been running a manor in this area for 400 years , sold all the farmland in the 1960s during the time of Marco's grandfather . The manor's history ends when he moves to Rome to work for the railway company. After that, Marco Marocco, who worked as an engineer in Rome, started an elevator manufacturing company, and made a fortune, saw his grandfather's farming as a child and could not forget his family's roots in agriculture. I'm going to think about it. Finally liquidated the company. At the age of 37 , he went to an agricultural school in Tuscany to study agriculture and became interested in wine making. After graduating, after experiencing actual wine making in Bordeaux's Grand Beausejour, etc., he returned to his hometown, bought back the land of his ancestors, and remade it into a field. The 400 -year-old manor of the Marocco family was recreated in the same village of Arche.

Biodynamic was inevitable

In 2010 Marco founded Palazzo Tronconi. With the goal of regenerating the individuality of the land that is our roots and leaving it for future generations, we will return to the same old farm as the grandfather who produces not only grapes but also vegetables, olive oil and honey. In order to highlight the individuality of Arche village, it was naturally necessary to revive biodynamics and indigenous varieties. What I learned at agricultural school was my grandfather's denial of farming. Even if we study agriculture, which is overwhelmingly efficient and accepted around the world, we feel that we cannot regenerate the individuality of the land that is our roots. I realized that the grandfather's manual work and wisdom are almost the same as biodynamic. Vineyards are connected to the land through the soil and grow (change) both in the short term and in the long term. If keeping the soil healthy is the maximization of the character of the land, the only way is not to give the soil anything scientific, but to normalize it and return it to a part of nature.

Saving indigenous varieties from oblivion

Another important thing was the revival of indigenous varieties of this land. Marco wonders about wines that are just as efficient (average) as culture and agriculture, and thinks that the indigenous breeds that were originally in this land should have been the best match for this land. At a time when cultivation and brewing techniques were scarce, the indigenous varieties that were naturally selected should have been the most compatible with the strength of the soil and terroir of this land. As much as possible, we will eliminate all chemical fertilizers and modern technology to achieve the same environment as the old farming. It was, in other words, to maintain a balance between heaven (cultivation) and earth (soil). And it was biodynamic that made it possible. The personality of the indigenous grapes was simple, rustic, and dainty, but it had the elegance and delicacy that has been loved since Roman times. In order to take advantage of this, natural fermentation with wild yeast is adopted on the brewing side. I hate to lose the essential taste (what it should be) by making wine making easier (economical) such as fining and filtering.
